Country Club

The Country Club neighborhood is located in the Northeast quadrant of the city of Edina.  It is bounded on the North by (roughly) Sunnyside Road and 44th Street, on the East by France Avenue, on the South by 50th Street and on the West by Hwy.100.  The Country Club neighborhood is inclusive of the Historic Country Club District in Edina, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  The land was originally part of the Browndale cattle Farm, operated by Harry Brown, and the Baird Family Farmland.  Thorpe Brothers Realty Company platted what is now the Country Club in 1924, and most of the homes within this planned community were built between 1924 and the early 1940’s.   It is recognized as being one of the first modern-day planned communities, with a Country Club Neighborhood Association, deed restrictions, and covenants (some prohibiting non-whites from owning or occupying any lot in the development). Thorpe Brothers had commissioned the building of the settlement’s eight model homes on Edina Boulevard and Moorland Avenue, and it was these revival model homes that lay the groundwork for the style and tone of the homes built in the rest of  the Historic Country Club District.  Within the Greater Country Club neighborhood is the site of the Edina Mills on  Minnehaha Creek that flows though its Western subdivisions.
